Your child should visit our
Jackson Heights pediatric dentist by his or her first birthday and we do our best to make their first visit to the dentist enjoyable and stress-free. We suggest that your child be told about the visit, and depending on their age, be assured that our dentist and compassionate staff will explain all procedures and answer any questions. It’s always best not to use words such as needle, pull, drill or pain as this can instill unnecessary fear. Dr. Sood and his dedicated staff make a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to your child. Cavities that are neglected often lead to issues which affect the development of permanent teeth. Baby teeth, also referred to as primary teeth, are important for proper chewing and eating, providing space for permanent teeth, and guiding them into the correct position while permitting normal development of jaw bones and muscles. It is very important to maintain the health of the primary teeth since they also affect the development of speech and also affect an attractive appearance. The front four teeth last until the child is 6 or 7 years old and the back teeth (cuspids and molars), aren't replaced until age 10 to 13.
You should begin brushing teeth as soon as your child cuts his first tooth. A pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste can be used after the child is old enough not to swallow it. Proper brushing removes plaque from the inner, outer and chewing surfaces. Flossing will remove plaque and should be started as soon as any two teeth touch. Be aware and don’t let your child eat too many sweet snacks that can lead to tooth decay. Our
Jackson Heights pediatric dentist promotes healthy eating habits which leads to healthy teeth.
